Roger McNamee has been an investor in science and tech for close to 30 years. His 2004 book — The New Normal: Opportunities in a Time of Great Risk — offers business strategies based on the economic and technological trends that are defining this era. He also plays guitar and bass in the band Moonalice, a band known for its clever use of social media.
The World Wide Web turned the desktop application into a passé. But will mobile applications destroy the Web? It could happen, especially if things continue as they are now. But who will save it? It won’t be mobile apps. They’re all the rage these days. Tens of thousands of them being maintained by developers (which might be the same people who previously developed desktop apps). And they are giving those who support the open Web reason to worry. Who knows, we might live in a future where the Web suffers a similar fate as the desktop application has — desktop applications are still being made, yes, but the future prospects are, at best, glum. However, steps can be taken in order to save the World Wide Web, but getting there is a long and difficult path.

Inframutt is a search engine designed to return the least popular results. Contrary to Google’s goals of providing users with the most relevant links, these backwards results are meant to highlight the underdogs of search rankings. The experience places a twist to typical vanity searches by users, as they return unexpected links rather than pages from a user’s established website or social network profiles. In ways, this could serve as an outlet for lateral inspiration. A search about Google itself reveals that results are capped at 375 pages, showing users the algorithmic end to parts of the internet.

In modern web interface design, no other principle has been heralded and pushed onto us as much as the concept of user-centered design. User-centered design tells us that we should do everything we can to make our user interfaces as easy to use and as intuitive as possible. However, a big part of designing user interfaces that are easy to use also involves figuring out what things should be a bit more difficult to to use.
